The way you use your spare time could change your future. This idea came to me when reading the story of MJ Demarco in The Millionaire Fastlane. Demarco is a businessman, but before that he was a limo driver. What interests me, though, is the way he used his spare time as a driver. He had a lot of spare time as a driver. He could spend hours waiting for his clients. So, how did he use that spare time? Most people might use it to rest, chat, or play games. But not Demarco. He used it to read books. Lots and lots of books. He used it to grow himself as a person.
Like it or not, we face many challenges in life. That’s why you need a trait that can help you overcome them. The trait is being resourceful. I learned about it when I read an essay by Paul Graham, the co-founder of Y Combinator, a startup incubator. In the essay, he wrote about the trait you need to succeed as a startup founder. He summed it up in just two words: relentlessly resourceful. You must become relentlessly resourceful to succeed as a startup founder. Thinking about it, I believe that the trait is important not just for startup founders, but for everybody. We all face challenges in life, and being resourceful can help you overcome them.
Do you want to go to the next level in life? If you do, then there is a key principle you must remember: Going to the next level requires sacrifice. The fact is: there is a price to pay to move up. If you don’t pay it, you will just stay where you are. Paying it, on the other hand, requires sacrifice. I had an experience with this when I studied towards my Master’s degree abroad.
To live your life to the fullest, it’s important that you have the right mindset. Your mindset determines how you see things and make decisions. The right mindset can help you achieve your goals, while the wrong one can hinder you. A key mindset you should have is the optimization mindset. What is it? The definition of optimize is “make the best or most effective use of (a situation or resource).” Based on that definition, the optimization mindset is the mindset of wanting to make the best or most effective use of what you have.
