What Are the Causes that Matter Most to You?

To have a fulfilling life, we need to do something that matters to us. In fact, there is no way we can have a fulfilling life if we are not doing something meaningful to us. And everyone has different causes they care about. Things that fill my mind day in and day out may be different than yours. But the important thing is, we all have something we care about.

And what are they for you? Have you been thinking about them lately? Have you done something about them? I’m afraid we are sometimes too busy with our activities that we have no time to think or do something about them. We may be drown in busyness and losing meaning in the same time without realizing it.

So here are some tips to help you get back on track:

  1. Slow down
Don’t do things so fast because by doing so you may not have sufficient time to think about whether or not you are doing the right things. People could run so fast that they don’t realize they are running to the wrong direction.
  2. Take time to think about what matter most to you
Before you can do anything about them, first of all you should know what the things that matter most to you are. So take some time to think about them. Be honest with yourself. What are the causes that matter to you most?
  3. Take simple action
Now that you have known about the things that matter most to you, think of a simple action you can do about them. You need something to get you started, no matter how simple. It could be calling an old friend to nurture a relationship, or donating to a charity in a cause you care about. Whatever that is, do it as soon as possible. In fact, there is no time better than now.
  4. Make a long-term commitment to do something
A simple action is just one action. You may soon forget it and get back to your routine. So the next step is you need something you can do in the long term. Think about something you can consistently do for long time regarding the cause you care about. Then make a commitment to do it. Making a commitment is the difficult part, but it’s worth it. Why? Because it will make your life more meaningful.
  5. Once again, slow down
You may follow all the steps above, but if you are once again drown in busyness, chance is you will be back to zero. Don’t forget to slow down so that you always have time to think about your direction.

You might ask, what are the causes that matter most to me? There are a few causes that fill my mind day by day, but there is one that I’d like to share to you and that is:

You

Yes, it’s you. As you might know, my life purpose is “helping as many people as possible live the fullest of life”, and I believe blogging is one way to fulfill it. Of course, I’m still learning and still far away from being able to help people live life to the fullest. But at least I’m trying and that makes my life more meaningful.

  1. Great post. I found no. 3 particularly powerful. Even a seemingly small act is still a step in the right direction. You’re still ahead with this small step than if you did nothing at all. Thanks.

  2. Great post Donald! The point on slowing down strikes a chord with me. Living in Singapore, a highly urbanized city has just too many to-dos, too little time for the truly important things in life.

I see people who had been busy a large portion of their life; they turned back and realized that they had been busy not knowing what they had really accomplished. Sad, just too sad.

    Slow down Donald!

I share your mission. Read it in my blog’s ‘about’ page if interested. I think I’ve just found a friend 🙂

    nice to meet you.

  3. Carlos,
I agree, we are still ahead of many other people even by taking simple action. ‘Big’ action may seem daunting and as a result many people postpone it. Simple action could help them remove this mental block.

    Lawrence,
Many people try to save time by doing things faster. They don’t realize that doing the wrong things will cost them much more time than what they save.
It’s great that we share the same mission! Nice to meet you too 🙂

  4. i like how you bracketed this all by “slow down”. very important. i needed to hear that.

  5. Great post – I got most impressed by the way you closed it: You think of me.

I thank you and get my very best wishes!

  6. Isabella,
Yes, I think slowing down is something we must always keep to be able to get the right picture of our life.

    Martin,
Welcome! I hope I can provide increasingly useful value in the future.

  7. […] mentioned it several times in this blog (such as in this post). The problem is, it consists of eleven words! Ouch. Maybe I should change “as many people as […]
